HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 cc275-6W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has received any representations in the past few months from the President of the County Emergency Planning Officer's Society regarding the setting up by his Department of an interdisciplinary working party to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and information on nuclear accident emergencies.

Mr. Hurd

Yes, the proposal is being considered in consultation with other Departments.

Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make it his policy to provide a review by his departmental scientists of the recent report by the Royal Institute of British Architects on nuclear disasters and the built environment, with regard to evaluating its utility for improving current emergency planning arrangements for nuclear accidents.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I have been asked to reply.

Emergency plans for civil nuclear installations are prescribed by the licensing procedures. The licensing authority, the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, takes account of relevant information available to it. I understand that the report referred to has not yet been published.
