HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 c224W
Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the number and location of lithotripters in use in the National Health Service, the capital and revenue costs of a lithotripter, the number of patients each lithotripter can treat in the course of a year, and the cost per patient of the alternative surgical and other treatments to lithotripsy.

Mrs. Currie

I am aware of six extra corporeal shock wave lithotripters in use within the National Health Service in England. These are located at:

  • The General Infirmary, Leeds
  • The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield
  • St. Peter's Hospital, London
  • St. Thomas's Hospital, London
  • Southmead Hospital, Bristol
  • Withington Hospital, Manchester

There are also facilities in Scotland, which are the responsibility of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland, and in the private sector.

The detailed information requested is not available centrally.
