Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list all the sources of drinking water supply in Britain with nitrate content exceeding the European Community limit.

Mr. Moynihan

[holding answer 24 October 1988]: A number of sources that feed public supplies regularly exceed the EC drinking water directive limit for nitrate. However, many of these are blended with water of lower nitrate content before being put into supply. Detailed information on them is not held by the Department.
