HL Deb 26 October 1988 vol 500 c1696WA
Lord Bethell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many Albanian nationals have sought political asylum or permission to live in the United Kingdom in each single year since 1980, and what has been the decision in each case.

Earl Ferrers

Applications have been very few. Applications for refugee status since 1980 have been:—

  • 1 in 1983
  • 2 in 1986
  • 1 in 1988 to date.
Refusals of refugee status have been:—
  • 1 in 1983
  • 1 in 1986.
Figures for 1980 to 1987 are published in Home Office Statistical Bulletins 12/86 and 16/88, Refugee Statistics United Kingdom. Over the same period no acceptances for settlement in the United Kingdom of Albanian nationals have been recorded. Figures are not available for any applications made outside the United Kingdom by Albanian nationals for permission to come to the United Kingdom on grounds other than refugee status. No applications were made in the United Kingdom between 1985 and 1987 by Albanian nationals to remain here on grounds other than refugee status. Information for earlier years is not readily available. All these figures, despite the care taken in compiling them, are subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large recording system.
