HC Deb 25 October 1988 vol 139 c173W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list, by each initial training institute, the number and percentage of students on initial teacher training courses who had discontinued their training by the end of(a) the first year, and (b) the second year, in 1978 and 1987, together with the number and percentage at each institute in these years who completed the course but failed their final examinations.

Mrs. Rumbold

Information in the form requested is not collected centrally. The patterns of wastage and other movements within initial teacher training are complex; some students repeat years of their course while others may join courses part way through. The Department calculates that on average about 25 per cent. of those who enter an undergraduate course of initial teacher training do not complete that course successfully, for whatever reason.
