To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what has been the United Kingdom's balance of payments in merchant shipping since 1979.

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the publication "United Kingdom Balance of Payments 1988 Edition—the CSO Pink Book" published by HMSO for the Government Statistical Service, a copy of which is in the Library.

Table 3.3 is the sea transport account.
