Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he intends introducing legislation to the Horse Racing and Betting Order 1976 in order that Downpatrick race club may be eligible for funding; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Viggers

[holding answer 24 October 1988]: It will be necessary to repeal the Horse Racing and Betting Order 1976 and seek Parliament's agreement to a new Order in Council. The Department of Agriculture has initiated the necessary legislative procedures. These could take at least two years to complete.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what level of funding will be offered to Downpatrick race club under an amended Horse Racing and Betting Order 1976.

[holding answer 24 October 1988]: No decisions have been taken on the level of funding, which will only be determined following discussions with the bookmaker organisations.
