HC Deb 25 October 1988 vol 139 c187W
36. Mr. Ward

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the impact on tourism of the opening of the Channel tunnel in 1993.

Mr. Lee

The completion of the Channel tunnel in 1993 represents a major opportunity for the tourism industry in Great Britain. Estimates suggest that about 15 million people will use the tunnel in its first year of operation. It is important that the United Kingdom tourism industry now considers what needs to be done to ensure that the full potential of the tunnel to bring visitors to Britain is realised.
