HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c112W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many safety audits have been carried out at King's Cross underground station since the fire; and if he will make a statement on the outcome.

Mr. Portillo

London Underground Ltd. (LUL) appointed a safety auditor in December 1987; King's Cross is one of the stations that have since been audited. The auditor is responsible for ensuring that the necessary follow-up action is taken.

In addition, the Department of Transport's railway inspectorate has visited King's Cross since the fire. I understand that the London fire brigade has also visited King's Cross on a number of occasions.

LUL has agreed safety standards for the building and reinstatement work now in progress at King's Cross with the railway inspectorate and, I understand, the London fire brigade. The completed work will be inspected by the railway inspectorate.
