To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of under-fives are in full-time state nursery education in each European Community country.

Information on the number of nursery places and information for areas within local education authorities are not available centrally. The number of pupils under five in maintained nursery schools and nursery classes in primary schools in North Yorkshire for each of the years 1983 to 1987 was as follows:

The number of pupils under five in maintained nursery schools in each local education authority in England in January 1988 is given in the following table. There are also pupils in nursery classes in primary schools; these are excluded from the answer.
