HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c7W
Mr. Hind

To ask the Attorney-General whether the Government have any proposals for the future of the legal profession; and if he will make a statement.

The Attorney-General

The Lord Chancellor has considered the report to the general council of the Bar and the council of the Law Society on the future of the legal profession chaired by Lady Marre which the Bar and the Law Society published in July this year.

The Lord Chancellor has now decided that it would be appropriate to publish his own proposals relating to the requirements for carrying out in the future the work presently conducted by the legal profession. He therefore intends to issue a Green Paper for consultation early in the new year with a view to reaching decisions before the summer recess 1989. Separate consultation papers on contingency fees and on corporate conveyancing will also be prepared with the intention of publication on a similar time scale to the proposed Green paper.
