HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c46W
103. Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what initiatives are being considered by Her Majesty's Government in respect of a revival of the Mekong river project; and what consideration has been given to the use of this scheme as a means of international support to the current development needs of Kampuchea.

Mr. Chris Patten

As I told the hon. Member on 13 July, at column206, we expect to spend about £100,000 in the current financial year in support of two projects managed by the interim Mekong committee. We hope that in the longer term the full committee will be reconstituted but believe it would be premature to consider now any initiatives to revive proposals for major projects to develop the Mekong river.
