HL Deb 24 October 1988 vol 500 c1466WA
Lord Renton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have any proposals for the future of the legal profession.

The Lord Chancellor

I have considered the report to the General Council of the Bar and the Council of the Law Society on the future of the legal profession chaired by Lady Marre which the Bar and the Law Society published in July this year.

I have now decided that it would be appropriate to publish my own proposals relating to the requirements for carrying out in the future the work presently conducted by the legal profession. I therefore intend to issue a Green Paper for consultation early in the new year with a view to reaching decisions before the Summer Recess 1989. Separate consultation papers on contingency fees and on corporate conveyancing will also be prepared with the intention of publication on a similar timescale to the proposed Green Paper.
