Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what information he has about the total number of specially adapted dwellings for the disabled built in England and Wales;

(2) what records he has relating to the number of specially adapted dwellings for the disabled built in the private sector in 1987;

(3) what information he has regarding the number of major adaptations for the disabled to council dwellings carried out by housing and social services authorities in England and Wales since 1979;

(4) if he has records relating to the number of specially adapted dwellings for the disabled built by local authorities in 1987.

Mr. Trippier

Numbers of new dwellings built in England for the chronically sick and disabled by local authorities and new towns and the private sector are published in table 6.7 of "Housing and Construction Statistics: 1977–1987". Table 7.5 of the same publication gives numbers of conversions or improvements in England and Wales carried out on local authority dwellings to provide accommodation for the disabled. Local authorities give estimates of the stock of dwellings designed or adapted for the disabled in their annual housing investment programme returns. Figures for April 1987 appear in the "Grossed HIP print for 1986–87". Copies of all these documents are in the Library.
