HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c61W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what representations he has received about the payment of crisis loans in the form of vouchers made out to one particular retailer; what is his policy on this matter; and if he will take steps to ensure that all such future loans provided by his Department will not restrict the freedom of choice of recipients.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

None. Guidance contained in the social fund manual makes it clear that crisis loans will usually be made by giro cheque payable to the applicant. Social fund officers may however decide to make a payment wholly, or in part, by voucher if this is likely to be to the benefit of the applicant or his family. We have no plans to alter this guidance.
