HC Deb 24 October 1988 vol 139 c101W
30. Mr. Chapman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement about the introduction of the autoguide experiment in London.

67. Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the consequences of the introduction of autoguide in London.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We issued a consultation document in April setting out our proposals to invite private industry to introduce a pilot autoguide scheme in London by 1990, capable of being upgraded to a fully commercial system. We are now considering the responses and hope to invite proposals for a scheme by the end of the year.

The transport and road research laboratory has estimated that in London autoguide could help drivers to reduce their average journey times by about 10 per cent. and reduce mileage by some 6 per cent.
