To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the estimated total cost of pay increases for the police force in 1988–89.

The estimated cost in 1988–89 of this year's pay increase for police officers below the rank of assistant chief constable in England and Wales is £86.5 million.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the average pay increase of the police force in percentages for each year since 1970.
