To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the latest estimated total cost of pay increases in 1988–89 for(a) nurses, (b) doctors and (c) ancillary staff in the National Health Service.

The information requested is as follows:—

National Health Service England

Cost of pay increases 1988–89 £ million

Nurses and midwives ¹731

Doctors and dentists 255

Ancillary staff ²52

² The figure follows the recent announcement of additional funding for the Nurses Clinical Grading Review.

² In addition a reduction of one hour in the standard working week from 12 December 1988.
