To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children took the GCE O-level and CSE examinations in Lancashire in 1987; and what were the results achieved.

In the 1987 summer examination session, some 29,000 pupils in maintained schools in Lancashire sat for O-level and CSE examinations. Information on examination achievements is not available on a strictly comparable basis, but in 1987 there were 20.59 thousand school leavers in Lancashire, of whom 4.76 thousand achieved 5 or more higher grades; 5.91 thousand attained 1 to 4 higher grades; 7.47 thousand achieved no higher grades; and 2.34 thousand gained no graded result.
