HC Deb 21 October 1988 vol 138 c1020W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the extent of the bomb damage to military married quarters in the island of Cyprus on 4 October; whether these premises were located within a United Kingdom sovereign base area; who was responsible; what was the source of the detonators and explosives used in these two bombs explosions; if he has any plans to improve security against terrorist attacks at the United Kingdom bases in Cyprus; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

The bomb explosions occurred at Berengaria camp which is a retained site and not part of the United Kingdom sovereign base areas. There were no casualties and the damage was very minor, consisting of two craters approximately 1ft deep in the gardens of married quarters. Responsibility for the attack and the source of explosives and detonators is not yet known but is the subject of investigation by the Cypriot police. In the light of recent terrorist activity, security in British bases has been reviewed and enhanced where appropriate. We cannot however comment on any particular security measures.
