To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he expects the remainder of the £4.5 million promised for the upgrading of the Royal Belfast hospital for sick children to be made available; what sums have been spent so far and on what; when he expects work to be completed; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 19 October 1988]: The present position regarding the programme of seven improvement schemes for the Royal Belfast hospital for sick children is as follows:

The two remaining schemes, the operating theatres/ intensive care unit and the out-patients department/A&E department have now been presented by the Eastern health and social services board as a composite scheme which is currently being considered. I cannot state at this time when this scheme will be completed.
