To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the total volume and value in pound sterling of surplus food and drink in the EEC.

Mr. Ryder

A note setting out the volume of EC intervention stocks of agricultural commodities, which includes only the surplus quantities held in United Kingdom and EC intervention and assisted private storage, is deposited in the Library of the House and is updated monthly. The estimated value of the EC stocks listed in the most recently deposited note, depreciated as now required following the February European Council agreement, is £3.12 billion.
