Mr. Sean Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what are the latest available figures for his Department in the London pay area of the number of vacancies by grade and the proportion this is of the grade complement in London.

In the diplomatic wing, there are currently 145.5 vacancies in all grades amounting to 2.6 per cent, of total complement. The majority are in clerical and technical support grades though the number in any grade fluctuates from month to month with changes in operational requirements and the recruitment cycle.

In the aid wing, there are 58 vacancies in all grades amounting to 10.9 per cent, of total complement. The majority are in clerical, secretarial and other support grades.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will provide the latest available figures for his Department for(a) numbers of staff in receipt of local pay additions, by grade, (b) location of those offices awarding local pay additions and (c) annual cost.

In the diplomatic wing of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, local pay addition is being paid to a total of 927 members of staff, in the following grades:

All the staff work in FCO buildings in central London, and at Croydon. The annual cost is £462,100.

In the aid wing, local pay addition is being paid to a total of 189 members of staff, in the following grades:

All the staff are working at ODA headquarters at Eland house, London, SW1. The annual cost is £120,400.
