§ Mr. StrawTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in theOfficial Report the number of officials, including Her Majesty's inspectors, their grades and duties, who work for the whole or part of their time on grant-maintained schools; and if he will estimate their cost.
§ Mr. Kenneth BakerThe Department has established a division to deal with policy on grant-maintained schools. The division currently consists of nine staff (one grade 5, one grade 7, one senior executive officer, one higher executive officer, two executive officers, one personal secretary and two administrative officers) working full time on all matters relating to grant-maintained schools. Their estimated annual salary cost at 1988–89 prices is about £150,000. Other members of the Department, including HM inspectorate, will in the course of their wider territorial, specialist or other policy functions devote some time to grant-maintained schools matters. It is not possible separately to quantify or cost this element of their work.
