HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 c945W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if, pursuant to his reply of 28 January,Official Report, column 374, he is now in a position to provide details of the amounts and destinations of trade in vicuna and stock levels of vicuna available in the United Kingdom market; what progress has been made in reconciling the discrepancy between United Kingdom and Japanese statistics; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The majority of international trade in vicuna products from the United Kingdom in recent years has been to Japan. The total exports (in kg) for the years 1983 to 1987 to Japan and to the rest of the world were:

Japan Rest of world
1983 54.71039 20.34270
1984 184.43149 20.83830
1985 245.01560 14.56341
1986 205.88448 6.19800
1987 332.42721 25.97895

The current stock, level of pre-convention vicuna held in the United Kingdom is 406,53 kg.

The apparent discrepancy between the United Kingdom and Japanese statistics has been resolved and full details of the exports concerned were contained in my letter of 29 September 1988 to the hon. Member.

Full details will be published in due course in the United Kingdom supplementary report on CITES trade for 1986 and the EC CITES reports for 1986 and 1987.
