HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 c963W
55. Mr. Yeo

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he last met Foreign Minister Shevardnadze of the Soviet Union; and what subjects were discussed.

Mr. Waldegrave

My right hon. and learned Friend last met Mr. Shevardnadze in New York on 26 September. They discussed arms control questions; regional conflicts, including the role of the United Nations in resolving them; CSCE and human rights; and bilateral relations.

68. Mr. Sims

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current state of Anglo-Soviet relations.

Mr. Waldegrave

Anglo-Soviet relations are better than for many years, and we welcome this. We maintain an active dialogue with the Soviet leadership in order to secure progress in arms control; on the resolution of regional conflicts; greater respect for human rights; and increase in trade; and more contacts at all levels between our two peoples.
