To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers were on duty in the London Borough of Newham over the weekend of 8–9 October 1988; and what was the total cost involved.

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that there were 2,607 police officers on duty on 8 October and 2,578 on 9 October. The total additional cost was £206,959.
