HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 cc897-900W
Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimates his Department has about the distribution of the work of home helps between their various client groups; and if he will indicate whether this has changed over the last 10 years.

Mr. Mellor

This information is no longer collected centrally. However, information collected by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and published in "Personal Social Services Statistics, 1986–87 Actuals" contains details of the home help service for the week beginning 10 November 1986. Information for the year ending 31 March 1977 was published in "Health and Personal Social Services Statistics for England, 1978". Copies are available in the Library.

The available information indicates that in both 1977 and 1986 the large majority of people receiving home help were aged 65 years and over, but it is not possible to deduce detailed trends.

Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the number of home helps in England in each local authority; and what this figure represents per 1,000 persons aged 65 plus years and per 1,000 persons aged 75 plus years, in the latest available year.

Mr. Mellor

The latest available information for each local authority in England is given in the table. The figures do not indicate the volume of service actually provided to people in these age groups. The exact proportion of the service which goes to particular age groups is not known.
