To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement about the establishment of the Curriculum Council for Wales.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Curriculum Council for Wales, which I appointed in shadow form in May 1988, was formally established on 16 August 1988. Its chairman is Mr. Hywel Evans OBE, JP, headteacher of Aberconwy school, Gwynedd. The other 13 members are:—

  • Mr. Richard Daugherty—Senior Lecturer, Department of Education, University College Swansea, West Glamorgan
  • Mr. Alwyn Evans—Chief Adviser, Gwynedd LEA
  • Mrs. Margaret Hemmings—Headteacher, Lewis Girls School, Mid Glamorgan
  • Mr. Michael Jones—Solicitor, Cardiff, South Glamorgan
  • Mr. Wynne Lewis—Head of Science Department, St. Cyres School, Penarth, South Glamorgan
  • Mr. John Love—Headteacher, Dyffryn Comprehensive School, Newport, Gwent
  • Miss Anne Powell—Headteacher, Birchgrove Infants School, Swansea, West Glamorgan
  • Mr. Eddie Roberts—Director of Education, Mid Glamorgan
  • Mr. Ieuan Roberts—Headteacher, Ysgol Croesatti, Flint, Clwyd
  • Mrs. Olwen Chapman—Headteacher, Llanefyl Church in Wales School, Powys
  • Mr. Ieuan Price—Principal, Carmarthen College of Technology and Art, Dyfed
  • Mr. Peter Winterburn—Lecturer in Biology, University of Wales College of Cardiff, South Glamorgan
  • Mrs. Beryl Brewer—Personnel Manager, Marks and Spencers, Cardiff, South Glamorgan.

The council was given its formal remit on 12 October and a copy of the remit has been placed in the Library of the House.
