HL Deb 10 October 1988 vol 500 cc711-2WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total cost to public funds of policing the Orange Order parades in Portadown on and around 12th July, including both police and army costs; whether any of these costs have been recouped; and which regiments were involved in assisting the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Lord Lyell

Precise details of the information requested are not available. However the cost of policing the Orange Order parades in Portadown from Sunday, 10th July through to Wednesday, 13th July has been estimated at £230,000; figures for the cost of military support to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Portdaown during the Orange Order marches are not available. These costs will not be recouped. It is not possible to cost day-to-day military activity in the Province, nor is it our practice to identify specific army regiments.
