HC Deb 30 November 1988 vol 142 c287W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what assessment he has made on the desirability of large-scale plutonium shipments by sea in(a) surface vessels or (b) submarines from facilities in the United Kingdom;

(2) if he will make a statement on the recently negotiated modification to annex B of the United States-Japan nuclear agreement regarding the sea shipment of separated plutonium outlining what he now regards as (a) the preferable and (b) the most likely transport arrangements for the return of separated plutonium to Japan after THORP is in service in 1992.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Transport options for returning the plutonium arising from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel at THORP are still under consideration. Before any decision is taken all necessary safety and security aspects will be carefully considered.
