To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's policy on, and response to, the draft Economic Community directive on the protection of threatened fauna, flora and habitats; and what legislative measures would be necessary to implement such a directive.

At the Environment Council in Brussels on 24 November member states unanimously rejected the approach embodied in the Commission's draft directive. We await revised proposals.
