To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has on recent measures the Warsaw pact has taken to modernise its nuclear and conventional forces.

The most recent and comprehensive account of the modernisation of the Warsaw pact's conventional and nuclear forces can be found in chapter six of this year's statement on the Defence Estimates (Cm. 344-I). As the statement makes clear, there has been no let-up in the Soviet Union's military modernisation programmes, despite improvements in East-West relations.
