§ Mr. Peter BottomleyExact comparisons with earlier years cannot be made because of recent changes in the Department's regional structure. Planned expenditure for 1988–89 of some £145 million in the west midlands region compares favourably with a best estimate for 1979–80 of £25 million. In real terms this represents more than a three-fold increase. Allocations for next year have still to be determined.
