To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how he intends in the short term to reduce congestion on the southern end of the M1 other than through the construction of the M40.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We have no plans for works which would be completed in advance of the M40.

A number of schemes for the M1 and alternative roads are planned for completion in the early 1990s.
