Mr. Fisher

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many of his Department's staff are employed(a) full-time and (b) part-time on design policy.

Mr. Forth

Seven administrative staff are engaged in design policy work in the Department. All seven are full-time employees, but only five spend their whole time on such work.

These figures do not include staff engaged on the design initiative.

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is the budget for his Department's(a) design campaign and (b) design initiative.

Mr. Forth

The budget allocation for the Department's design promotion work in 1988–89 is £7.526 million. This includes a £5.885 million grant in aid to the Design Council.

There is no specific budget provision for the design initiative which is one of six demand-led consultancy options within the enterprise initiative. However, over 14 per cent. of current demand is for the design initiative and, to date, over £5 million has been committed to design projects.
