HC Deb 15 November 1988 vol 140 cc587-90W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many undergraduate courses in the arts and science subjects were taught wholly or partly through the medium of Welsh in the University of Wales; and if he will list the subjects, with the colleges at which they were taught and the number of students registered under each subject in each college for the following years(a) 1970–71, (b) 1975–76 and (c) 1980–81.

Mr. Jackson

The following information has been provided by the University of Wales registry. The following figures include only those who registered to study in departments where the full range of teaching provision (lectures, tutorials and seminars) was formally available through the medium of Welsh. Figures are not available on the number of students for whom informal arrangements were made in other subjects, for example tutorials conducted in Welsh in science subjects.

It is not possible to indentify the number of students in each department who were pursuing courses through the medium of Welsh in 1970–71 (other than those in the departments of Welsh), because the available figures do not distinguish between English-medium and Welsh-medium students.
