Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people in London have been prosecuted successfully for keeping an unlicensed vehicle on the road in each of the past five years.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

[holding answer 7 November 1988]In the Metropolitan police district and the City of London police force area there were, in 1985 and 1986 respectively, 17,158 and 19,890 findings of guilt for failure to pay the appropriate duty for a motor vehicle licence. Information for earlier years could be provided only at disproportionate cost. National figures for this offence are published annually in table 5 of "Offences relating to motor vehicles, England and Wales, Supplementary tables". The issue for 1987 will be published soon.
