HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc413-4W
Sir Philip Goodhart

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what instructions he has given for the modification of cars used by his Department so that they can use unleaded petrol.

Mr. Sainsbury

I am pleased to announce that it has now been decided that all new staff cars due to be bought in the future will be capable of operating on unleaded petrol. Of the existing vehicles, 2,200 can be modified simply and work has been put in hand to do this. By the end of this financial year 70 per cent. of the fleet will be capable of using unleaded petrol; this figure will be increased progressively over the next three years to 100 per cent. as the balance of cars that cannot be converted cost-effectively become due for replacement.
