HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c473W
Sir Anthony Grant

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what statistical information is collected on the employment or profession of suicides.

Mrs. Currie

The occupation of the person who has died is recorded on the death certificate in accordance with instructions issued by the Registrar General. The occupation entered on the form refers to the latest full-time gainful employment followed. In the case of the unemployed or retired people, the last occupation is still to be recorded with, for the retired only, a note to that effect. The occupation of a woman should be recorded only when she was in paid employment most of her life.

These data are then coded by OPCS in accordance with the OPCS "Classification of Occupations", a copy of which is in the Library. Data on the occupation of suicides may be found in "Decennial Supplement Series DS No. 6 Occupational Mortality 1979–1980, 1982–83 Parts 1 and 2", copies of which are also in the Library.
