HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c386W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state in real terms the value of(a) the maximum and (b) the average student grant in (i) 1958, (ii) 1968 and (iii) 1988.

Mr. Jackson

The values, at September 1988 prices, of the standard maintenance grant for students studying outside London and living away from home and the average grant paid net of parental and other contributions are as follows:

1958 £ 1968 £ 1988 £
Rate of grant 2,347 2,425 2,050
Average grant paid n/a 1,877 11,195
1 Estimated.
n/a—Not available.

The rates of grant shown do not include additional allowances to which students may be entitled, although such allowances are reflected in the average grant paid. The current mandatory awards arrangements were introduced in 1962. The 1958 figure is based on the rate of Department of Education state scholarships applicable to students in college or hall accommodation at universities other than London, Oxford and Cambridge. Figures for 1958 and 1968 have been adjusted to take account of subsequent changes in the arrangements for assisting with travel expenses.
