HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c417W
Mr. Hayward

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if his Department is involved with industry and commerce in London in their efforts to reduce skill shortages.

Mr. Cope

Yes. It is primarily the responsibility of employers to meet their needs for skills through training. For their part, the Government have increased their investment in training massively since 1979, particularly for young people and the adult unemployed. Both YTS and employment training are delivered in close collaboration with local industry and commerce. Under employment training specific skill shortages, for example, schemes to train adults in construction skills within Docklands have been announced recently.
