To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the average unrebated rent and the average rebate for(a) Nottingham and (b) the United Kingdom as a whole, for each year since 1979.

Notes:

1. Average rent rebate is the total rent assistance divided by the total number of tenants, whether or not in receipt of benefits.

2. Prior to 1983, average rebates exclude rent assistance to those tenants in receipt of supplementary benefit.

3. Average rebates 1983–87 exclude small amounts of housing benefit supplement.

4. New housing benefit legislation was introduced in April 1988. National estimates are not yet available.
