HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc369-70W
88. Mr. Jacques Arnold

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance Her Majesty's Government are providing to help alleviate the effects of the recent flooding disaster in the Punjab; and what advice he will give to British residents wishing to give financial contributions towards rapid and effective disaster relief in that area.

Mr. Chris Patten

We have made limited cash donations to both India and Pakistan to provide immediate relief, and stand ready to help with rehabilitation. It is our general policy to respond to specific requests for disaster relief, and neither Government have made an international appeal for help.

The British Red Cross Society is happy to channel any suitable contributions for flood victims to the Indian Red Cross or Pakistan Red Crescent.
