To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will give the estimated number of people who have taken out private medical insurance in Scotland;

(2) if he will give the estimated number of persons, including dependants, in Scotland who have some form of private medical insurance through their employers.

[holding answer 27 June 1988]It is estimated that 96,000 people (210,000 including dependants) in Scotland have some form of private medical insurance. Of the 96,000 subscribers, 60,000 hold medical insurance purchased through companies.
