HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c495W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the action taken by his Department to monitor pollution in waters around the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

Primary responsibility for monitoring coastal and estuarial waters in England and Wales rests with the regional water authorities. The Department is not directly involved but does periodically review the authorities' monitoring programmes. The results of monitoring river and estuarial water quality are published every five years by the Department and the Welsh Office in the river quality survey of England and Wales. A copy of the 1985 survey report is available in the Library.
