To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the average income of a single pensioner in 1979 and 1986.

The average total net income of a single pensioner in 1979 was £55.42 (at 1986 prices) rising to £69.73 in 1986. These figures represent an increase in real terms of 25.8 per cent.

The average total net income of a pensioner couple in 1979 was £103.09 (at 1986 prices) rising to £123.76 in 1986. These figures represent an increase in real terms of 20.1 per cent.
