HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc505-6W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to how many people are currently paying off a mortgage; how many of those have their mortgage repayments adjusted monthly, quarterly, or yearly; and, of those, what is the average increase in repayments by region in relation to that date at which interest rates were at their lowest since June 1987.

Mr. Trippier

At 30 June 1988 there were 7,230,000 building society outstanding mortgages in the United Kingdom. Since June 1987, the interest rate for the top 14 building societies was at its lowest on 1 May 1988. I regret that the remainder of the information is not available to the Department.

Mr. Evennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is his Department's estimate of the cost to the London borough of Bexley of providing mortgages for residents of Thamesmead in accordance with the London Government Reorganisation (Mortgages) Order 1988;

(2) what additional funds are being made available to the London borough of Bexley for the provision of mortgages in accordance with the London Government Reorganisation (Mortgages) Order 1988.

Mr. Trippier

Our estimate of the cost is minimal, but we shall take any cost into account in the context of Bexley's annual housing investment programme bid.

Mr. Evennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has any plans to introduce an order to amend the provision of the London Government Reorganisation (Mortgages) Order 1988.

Mr. Trippier

No.

Mr. Evennett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received concerning the operation of the London Government Reorganisation (Mortgages) Order 1988.

Mr. Trippier

My Department received seven responses to the consultation letter of 5 July on the proposals for the London Government Reorganisation (Mortgages) Order 1988. Since laying the order further representations have been made by the London boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich.
