To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total number of staff employed in local authority housing departments in 1979 and at the present date.

The total number of staff employed in the administration of housing matters in local authorities in England was 47,305 full-time equivalents in June 1979 and 60,563 full-time equivalents in June 1988.
