HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc396-7W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of firearms and knives handed into the South Yorkshire police during the recent amnesties; and if he will give a breakdown by the four local authorities.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the chief constable of South Yorkshire that a total of 179 knives, three firearms and 52 other offensive weapons were surrendered in the knives campaign between 27 June and 11 July. A breakdown of these figures by local authority area has not been kept.

The number of firearms handed in during the September firearms amnesty, by local authority area, is as follows:

Town Firearms
Doncaster 139
Barnsley 97
Rotherham 62
Sheffield 256

A total of 131 other weapons were also surrendered. More detailed information in respect of these is not readily available.
